 Main Characters

Avatar Aang
Nation: Air Nomads
Age: 12 (112 if you count time in ice block)
Bending: All
First Appeared: "The Boy in the Iceberg"
Bio: Aang is a fun-loving kid who seeks good in everyone, even some of his enemies. Having ran away from his home, The Southern Air Temple, after learning his identity as the Avatar, Aang and his sky bison, Appa, end up trapped in an iceberg for 100 years. When awakened by Sokka and Katara, Aang learns of a war that took place during his time in the iceberg and that he is the last airbender alive. Already a master in airbending, Aang must master the three other elements with the help of Katara, Toph, and Sokka in order to stop the Fire Nation from winning the war and restore balance to the world.
Katara
Nation: Southern Water Tribe
Age: 14
Bending: Waterbending
First Appeared: "The Boy in the Iceberg"
Bio: Katara is the sister of Sokka and daughter of Hakoda, Chieftain of the Southern Water Tribe. Due to her mother's death in a Fire Nation raid when she was young and her father leaving to help in the war two years ago, Katara has taken up a lot of responsibilities. Often referred to as the mother figure of the group, Katara can sometimes be over-competitive and very prideful, yet she is very brave and independent. Being the only waterbender in the Southern Water Tribe, Katara started out a novice teaching herself her own techniques. When she met Aang in "The Boy in the Iceberg", she traveled to the North Pole along with Aang and Sokka in order to learn more waterbending from a master in the Northern Water Tribe. Eventually she became a waterbending master herself and is now Aang's waterbending teacher.
Sokka
Nation: Southern Water Tribe
Age: 15
Bending: None
First Appeared: "The Boy in the Iceberg"
Bio: Sokka is the brother of Katara and son of Chief Hakoda.  Sokka is a very skeptical man who uses science, as opposed to the Avatar world equivalent of faith in his everyday life.  Sokka is a very capable, sarcastic leader who ironically is usually thought to be not very bright. Though Sokka doesn't like Aang at first, he decides to travel with him and Katara around the world in search of masters in each of the bending disciplines. Sokka is very biased against the Fire Nation and is quick to assume everything from the Fire Nation is evil (including birds and babies!). While Aang, Katara, and Toph work on their bending, Sokka is usually working on reading maps or plotting attacks on the Fire Nation.  Throughout their adventures, Sokka matures and goes through several romantic encounters.
Toph
Nation: Earth Kingdom
Age: 12
Bending: Earthbending
First Appeared: "The Swamp"
Bio: Toph is a girl who is blind by sight, yet she uses vibrations and earthbending to see.  Due to this, she became an earthbending master on her own after learning earthbending from badger moles.  Toph is a brash and strong girl,  usually thought as very unladylike and rude, she does not care what other people think about her because she knows who she is.  Aang saw a vision of Toph in "The Swamp" and she finally joined Aang and his friends in "The Blind Bandit" after dealing with troublesome earthbenders from a tournament.  She then became Aang's earthbending teacher. Katara and Toph often clash due to their different personalities, Aang is usually bullied by Toph, and Sokka and Toph get along great.
Zuko
Nation: Fire Nation
Age: 16
Bending: Firebending
First Appeared: "The Boy in the Iceberg"
Bio: Zuko is the son of Fire Lord Ozai and Fire Lady Ursa, nephew of Iroh, and brother of Princess Azula.  Although he first appeared as evil, Zuko really is kind-hearted deep down.  Though he does have a short temper, he does the right thing in many situations.  Burned by his own father for speaking out of term in a war meeting, Zuko was exiled for three years until he captured the Avatar.  Accompanied by his Uncle Iroh, Zuko came close to capturing the Avatar many times, yet he failed usually since his plans were not well thought out.  Eventually, Zuko was on the run from the Fire Nation along with his Uncle.  He finally was captured in Ba Sing Se, yet he "redeemed" himself when he helped Azula take down the Avatar and was allowed back into the Fire Nation.  Though he had everything he wanted, he hurt his relationship with his Uncle and became very confused.  Eventually, Zuko came to the conclusion that the war was wrong and that he was going to side with the Avatar to become his firebending master.  Although Zhao may have seemed like Zuko's primary rival at first, Azula has been Zuko's rival for his whole life.
Uncle Iroh
Nation: Fire Nation
Age: 50's
Bending: Firebending
First Appeared: "The Boy in the Iceberg"
Bio: Iroh is the first born son of Fire Lord Azulon, brother of Ozai, father of Lu Ten, and uncle of Zuko and Azula.  Iroh is a wise, yet humorous old man that has been through a lot.  His passion is tea.  Iroh was the top leading general of the Fire Nation forces and he almost conquered Ba Sing Se until his only child, Lu Ten, was killed in action.  After Lu Ten's death, Iroh abandoned his 600 day siege of Ba Sing Se and eventually returned home to the Fire Nation.  Originally supposed to succeed his father as Fire Lord, Ozai mysteriously became Fire Lord over Iroh.  When Zuko was banished from the Fire Nation, Iroh went with him to help in his journey to capture the Avatar.  Zuko's quest led the two to the North Pole and there Iroh betrayed the Fire Nation in order to protect the balance of the world.  Iroh and Zuko became outlaws of the Fire Nation and ran throughout the Earth Kingdom evading Azula.  Eventually, Iroh was captured at Ba Sing Se and taken back to the Fire Nation as a prisoner.  During the time Iroh was imprisoned, he did mysterious things.  On the Day of Black Sun, he broke out and is now nowhere to be found.  Although Zuko is usually disrespectful to Iroh, Iroh thinks of Zuko as his own.  Iroh is usually a passive man, but when he must, he is a deadly firebender.
Azula
Nation: Fire Nation
Age: 14
Bending: Firebending
First Appeared: "The Storm"
Bio: Azula is the daughter of Fire Lord Ozai and Fire Lady Ursa, the sister of Zuko, and niece of Iroh.  Azula is a perfectionist who gets mad if something doesn't go perfect.  She is indeed a firebending prodigy who knows warfare and firebending very well. Very cunning and smart, Azula has been tricking people since she was a child.  Her only friends are Mai, Ty Lee, and at times, Zuko.   Thought to be a monster by her own mother, Azula is a very deadly firebender. She's the first person we see shoot lighting.  Azula was at the Agni Kai where Zuko was burned in "The Storm".  She's sent on a mission to capture her brother and uncle at the end of "The Siege of the North Part II".  She pursues Zuko and Iroh throughout the Earth Kingdom, but eventually her goal changes to capturing the Avatar and then changes again to taking over Ba Sing Se.  Eventually, Azula does take over Ba Sing Se and defeats Aang with the help of Zuko.  She also manages to capture Iroh.  Azula is the one to foil Sokka's invasion plan on the Day of Black Sun.  Azula has been thought to be evil from her childhood.  She's also an excellent liar.

When Aang and Appa were reunited,  everything returned to peace in Appa's mind.  Usually, Appa is what the Fire Nation searches for when they are looking for the Avatar.
