The Gaang in our world

Postby Earth001 » Sun Jun 19, 2011 9:12 pm

SO I had this going through my head but during season 3 what would happen if a ATLA plot device somehow sends the Gaang into modern day New York City? How would they survive? They land in the outskirts of the city.
There are two scenarios that could happen
1. They can bend in our world
2. They can not bend in our world

"Ooh! A TIME MACHINE you say? : D" - lol joke

Ummm, I'm not really sure if I quite got the question... but... If the GAang got sent into 21st century, today, somewhere in New York City...umm... they'd book a hotel, buy hot-dogs, go see a movie, get new clothes and probably work out how to get back into whatever their century and world is/was. ^^"

They might try to teach the people of today about bending and the lessons of life that come with it. For example, connection with nature, less time worrying about superficial things, more connection with family and friends, etc.

I've been spending the last year exploring this idea in as solemn terms as I can.

Agreed, too many, it's a very common concept. Which is part of the reason why I chose to do it myself. Because A) most people do high school and there's already enough HS-themed TV shows, so a lot of those themes get worn thin as is, as opposed to the differed tones of college and B) too many people just re-tell the story of Avatar in AU's and don't use the AU's to explore alternate plots. And well, optionally C) too many people just use it to create legal-age smutty shipping nonsense.

I can assure you that my own efforts are not, in fact, stereotypical with those ideas, and I have faith that there are others out there who have tackled worn concepts but injected different ideas into them. After all, it's that kind of thing that gets artists/writers to join into a fandom and create stuff for it to begin with. :geek:

It's hard to disagree with you based on your personal reasoning for writing what you do. However, I may say that I have seen MANY ATLA College stories - and the difference is how you present it. Writing a good story, devoid of Mary Sues and plotholes and information that the author chose to ignore for his or her own advantage, is what makes the story good (and not just in this case). I think that DS does a good job with his retelling, but like I said, it's all in the presentation.

That's very true, I agree. How the characters get presented, how the tie-ins to the show get presented...and yea, deciding which things to omit, or change, is what shapes the AU into its own and differentiates it.

Although, I'm confused. You mention my re-telling...? I'm not sure what that means. If you mean my own project, it's not really a re-telling of the show, but you haven't read it yet, right?

I guess now that I think on it, your theme totally applies specifically to re-tellings in big-formats. Modernized movie adaptations of older stories/series are just re-tellings, and people either love them or hate them based on how they're presented (Star Trek vs Transformers, for example?).

Oh, right, or the obvious one for us all here.

Presentation can change everything.
