Pai Sho Research

Postby scarletcougar » Fri Dec 26, 2008 9:49 pm

I think this is a good plan. I posted in the Market the new images of the completes board and blank pieces my dad made for me.

Rules pending.

Let's consider a lit of tiles and a generic set of rules that all nations know before creating the nation specific variants.

Tiles:
White Lotus (only one)
Wheels (how many?)
Swords (how many?)
Ships (how many?)
Chrysanthemums (how many?)

What other pieces are there you think?

Maybe something to consider first is in what way the pieces are utilized. Do you use one standard set, with which both players play, each player a standard set of his own, or maybe a specialized set (although I think the last makes the game lose some of its chess-like charm).

It may be helpful to extrapolate some set of rules if someone knew something about the Chinese symbolic vocabulary; in other words, what significance do these symbols have? I know, for instance, the chrysanthemum is the symbol of the Japanese Emperor. Maybe that tile is the equivalent of the King in Chess?

Oh... Fascinating! If chrysanthemums are representative of the Japanese emperor, then maybe these pieces (because there seems to be several on a board) represent perhaps generals or elite pieces. I am still thinking about this.

My guess is that there are two (to four) basic sets (one per player) that can be played with using standardized rules. Then there are supplemental pieces to make the game more interesting and challenging for more advanced (or archaic) players. These players might have specialized tiles, like the white lotus.

I am currently reviewing the rules for the games of GO, Shogi, Chinese Checkers, and Ma Jong. I hope to find some enlightenment.

Something I did notice is that the game can be played on the lines or in the squares. Upon further notice, the game actually seems to start on the lines at the outside edge of the board and then pieces move into the squares. *see ATLA Book 1*

More thinking is needed.

This is so going in the right direction :)

I do think it might be a good idea to set up some kind of rules, which may be based on eastern board games and chess combined. And then to decide which pieces every basic set will have. I don't think the series give enough information to play the game. The pai sho game seems very mystical. That's probably why so many people want to find out how it's played ;)

Karma for you Scarlet

Pai Sho Research

Postby foolster41 » Sat Apr 04, 2009 9:50 am

Hi! I'm the creator of Paisho project wiki. I'm really happy people are noticing it. I've seen now quite a few links to it on places like Wiki-how. I thought I'd reply to some comments on it. I've only browsed this topic.

I agree it's pretty unorganized and incomplete. Some people gave some ideas and then disappeared for a while. It's been a few weeks since the last post there. I've been kind of distracted, so I'm afraid I haven't been contributing much either.

Mostly the ideas I put out were just so there wouldn't be a blank space. if there's somethig you don't think works, I'd love to hear why, because I don't want stuff to stay that doesn't work (and frankly, I know over all, it doesn't work in its current form.)

I drew inspiration from Japanese flower arranging. If you have ideas that you'd be willing to share in a creative-commons licensed game, I'd love to have them on the wiki. Of course, you don't have to. But I thought i'd put that out there. Thanks!

Pai Sho Research

Postby marisama44 » Wed Apr 08, 2009 4:49 pm

hey. I was looking up info to continue making my pai sho table, i've been going by the wiki information on playing the game since it seems pretty sound. Thanks to the guy who took the time to make it up! I konw there's discrepencies in the show but we can obviously tell the game wasnt elaborated on because it probably wasnt completely thought out by the creators. I like the wiki article's version, it's the most complete I've seen so far.

I've made a pai sho table already, and I'm currently staining and finishing up a second one, which I will post pictures of when I'm finished.... The reason I'm here is to look up tile designs, I'm in the process of making tiles and I want to see as many pictures of the orginals as I can. Does anyone have pictures of those that arent broken? Anyway, here's my already made pai sho table...you can see its full descriptions and translations here: http://queenmari.deviantart.com . I will post my new one as soon as it's done. :3

That is quite remarkable, truly a fantastic work of craft. Kudos and karma. We have another member who also had a custom Pai Sho table done, and is also in the process of making the tiles. http://avaportal.proboards.com/index.cgi....ead=4084&page=1

Ohhh! Great work! My dad just gave me the blank tiles for me to now paint. White Lotus will be the first tiles.

Here are some new websites I found about Pai Sho:

http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Pai_Sho

I still disagree with the harmonies thing in the rules.

Pai Sho Research

Nearly done with my new table, the prototype for the ones I'm going to probably sell. Pictures very soon, after another coat of stain and some varnish. It looks great.

Scarlet, i dont know how you're going to design your tiles, but to me, the harmonies way of playing the game seems to be the ONLY full explination at the moment online. Its the only guidelines on which I can make a complete game set with, so i think I may just go with that. I wish there was some way to get in touch with the creators to ask them what they think. I'm sure they have a general idea thought out about how its played, but were never able to address it in the show, who knows. I'm going to contact someone on Deviant Art I know that worked on the 3rd season to see if she can help me any with this. I'll be back with pictures.
