Aang got taller O.o

Postby ramenbreath » Mon May 25, 2009 6:10 pm

i was just watching the episodes and in 'Secret tunnel', Aang is standing next to Katara and he is really short compared to her. but at the end of the series, he's at her height. did anyone else notice this?

I didn't notice, but it wouldn't surprise me at all... Katara was hoping for a tall man to marry ;)

Aang got taller O.o

Postby Niiro-dono » Mon May 25, 2009 8:27 pm

Aang did grow taller. What's kind of funny is that he's still shorter than what he imagined in one of his dreams, specifically the dream that probably matters the most to him. In the "Nightmares and Daydreams" episode and in one of his daydreams, he was actually taller and almost as tall as Katara. This is the daydream where he's dreaming about kissing Katara and making her his "forever girl", but was actually "air-kissing" and in embarrassment, tells Katara that he's dreaming about living underwater. I would say that unconsciously, height is very important to Aang.

Aang got taller O.o

Postby ramenbreath » Mon May 25, 2009 8:36 pm

maybe it's for the same reason i feel about height. i am very short and all my friends are taller than me and if i imagine myself with someone (romaticaly or friendly) i tend to make me at least 2 inches shorter than them. unlike the normal 12 inches.

well, anyways, Aang getting taller is all about him growing up. XD

Aang got taller O.o

I am sure the creators did not want Aang to be on his tippytoes to kiss Katara.

I did notice Aang seemingly a little less short towards the middle of the series. I would guess that height is a matter to him like his age. "Little brother" says it all.

Aang got taller O.o

I'm sure that he grew. After all, the series takes place over a year. I doubt that, being a 12-year old, he would have stayed the same height. (puberty!)

It makes perfect sense for him to get taller over a year. You would figure that everyone might go through a change, but most likely Aang and Toph since they are the smallest and the youngest of the main characters.

It does seem that Aang's growth is much more noticeable than Toph's. The creators didn't have to worry about Toph's height being an impediment the way Aang's height would be, especially during the kissing scene.

Aang got taller O.o

I think Toph showing up in Season 2 allowed them to fudge around with the passage of time in the series. It has been a year since the series started, but without paying close attention, it is hard to tell where all the time goes. It certainly seems like that more time passed in season 1 than any other season, but I am not too sure about that.

I do think that there was more attention was paid to Aang - after all, he IS the main character, and has a major love interest- but Toph's late enterance in the series does not give us much comparison. I mean, by the time we even hear about Toph, the gAang has already traveled the world once, and Aang has mastered waterbending. From the time frame given later, it's not too difficult to guess that not as much time has passed in the show since, at least in comparison to their first cross-world journey.

O.O You know; I did happen to notice that Aang got taller as the story progressed and being at the age of 12; its usually around about that time that boys tend to have growth spurts, even if its just a few inches. I'm pretty sure my growth spurt was round about 12 as well; but anyways as people have said, I don't think the writer's would have wanted Aang to be short for the finale kiss with Katara. It probably would have been pretty funny in a way but I noticed she hardly had to move her face down in order to kiss him. So yep Aang's growth spurt was a good thing xD.

His voice gets noticeably deeper, as well. Watch the first episode and then watch the last one and you can really tell a difference.

I agree with what you say about season one. The season begins before the Winter Solstice, so we can only assume that the first book takes place during the entire winter. Of course, the same has been said for the other two seasons. If that's true, that means that season one took just as much time (the literal sense) out of the show as season two and three did. While season one does seem longer, that's only because it's just not as well strung together as season two and season three were. It was very episodic. Now, the first half of season three was also episodic, but with things like Combustion Man following the Gaang and Sokka pulling out his calendar every now and then, it didn't seem as seamless as season 1 did and you felt time progressing quickly. Season two was like a big continuous movie.

I think the reason season one is the way turned out to seem the longest was because at first, Nick only ordered about six episodes I think. So the story seems really episodic and like the episodes could take place whenever in the early half of season one aside from the series premiere. Then, Nick ordered a whole season after Avatar did well enough to earn it that. Thus, you got episodes like "The Storm" and "The Blue Spirit" that made the show not only a bit darker, but clearly progressed time. In the end though, season one is winter, season two is spring, and season three is summer.

Sorry for getting off on that tangent. As for Aang getting taller, growth spurts aren't that uncommon with 12 year old boys as everyone else has said. Of course, we also must keep in mind that the animation and the way the characters were just drawn changed throughout the series. So, I think the reason for his tallness compared to when we first saw him and then when we last saw him is a combination of taking puberty into account and the way the animation evolved in the show.
