The Avatar Portal - An Avatar MMORPG

Postby Snake of the South » Thu Jul 23, 2009 2:25 am

The Avatar Portal (MMORPG)

What is it?

Basically, "The Avatar Portal" is an MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role playing game) created by me (and whoever else decides to help) and officially sponsored by AP that takes place in the Avatar world and even our world (sort of). In the game, players will create characters that will go through the "Avatar Portal" and end up finding themselves in the world of Avatar among characters both familiar and new.

Sounds interesting. But will it be 3D?

3D games are somewhat tough for people like me who have not gone to video game creation school. "The Avatar Portal" will run on the Eclipse Evolution engine (an engine which is can be modded to do almost anything you want). Eclipse Evolution uses 2D graphics. So the graphics for "The Avatar Portal" will be reminiscient of that of an old school Zelda or Final Fantasy game. I can't say much about how the quality will be, but I will say I'm aiming for it to be the quality of that of a 2D DS game (like Pokemon).

Are there subscription fees plan for the game? And is this game only available to people on this site?

No, if I charged you to play this game, I could get sued big time. Especially if the game is highly successful. So it will be completely free. While the game will be hosted/sponsored/whatever by AP, anyone is welcome to play it. So if you're from another site, but are for some reason visiting AP right now, don't be scared to jump in the beta once that goes live.

Beta?

Basically the stage of development when we have players log on and test the game out for any bugs or any other problems. I'm aiming to get the beta out by December 2009, but don't take that as an official beta release date.

So how far exactly in development is this game and who all is working on it?

The game right now is in the planning stages. Actual production won't start until Avren is done. I myself am the creator and am heading the project. Uncle Iroh will be helping me develop the game as well and probably will co-head the project with me.

Can I help?

Yes you can actually. This is actually pretty much why I made the post in the first place. The other stuff was a brief overview and an attempt for people outside of the chatbox to hear of the game. Anyway, the game's staff as of right now is just Uncle Iroh and myself. What we need are the following:

Mappers
These people make the maps (or areas) of the game. A very very very important job. You will need to demonstrate to me you can make good maps before you land this job on my little test game I have set up right now (I'll even offer to train you).

Spriters
Another very very very important job. Basically, without spriters, we have no graphics for the game besides the ones that come along with the initial download and maybe some I can score off the internet. Spriting is basically the art of creating pixalated 2D graphics. Everything you see in a game such as "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" is a sprite. You'll have to send me a sample of your spriting abilities to score this job as well.

Developers
While technically both the above are developers as well, what I'm talking about here are the people who make the items and NPCS and the spells and decide what the drop rate on items are and such. Developers also help me come up with ideas for the game, what maps we should make, and what direction the story should go and such.

We could eventually use scripters as well that script special events that occur within the game, but that's not a priority right now as I want to get the ground work layed down first. We could also use people who know how to compose MIDI music since we will need Avatary sounding music, but again, it's not a priority.

If you decide you want to pursue helping make this game, don't go about it half-assed. Sure, it will be something fun to do, but you need to be willing to make some type of commitment to this or else this game will never get released. Don't be afraid to step up and try to join in helping make this game!

Lastly, if you have any ideas or any questions, feel absolutely free to post them here. If you're interested in helping make the game though, you can post here, but it would probably be better to PM me so I can send you stuff easier.

This is an amazing idea!

I've thought about the idea of an Avatar MMORPG for a while, but to see it put into action is incredible. I don't have much experience with spriting, but I'm pretty good at graphic arts, and computer drawing, so if you need some help, I'd be happy to participate. I could also work as a developer, if need be.

My questions:

1. Will it be combat, or just walking around and talking to people?
2. Will characters be customizable?

1. It will be both. I'm trying to aim it to where the game isn't just a big grind, but it isn't boring if you catch my drift. I want there to be times where you can explore and not worry about enemies and such if that makes sense.

2. Yes kinda. I mean you can pick if you want to be a boy or girl and you choose what class you want to be (probably non bender, bender, and something else). I plan to put items in the game that you pick up and see yourself wearing. So there will be a level of customization in the game definitely in some form or another.

I would love to help, rather just saying what I would like do, I decided to just say what I'm good at and you can decide if I'm needed :)
Well I've worked with graphic editing programs for about 4 years(signatures, colorations, webpages and even spent some time on creating items for another game)
My MMORPG experience - well I've played almost every free MMo there is.
If there is anything more you need to know - PM.

This sounds cool but i wish it could have better graphics and could you tell us if we get to choose a nation or if it asks you questions and gives you a nation depending on your answers like in some games? Oh would you have ranks in the nations like master, soldier, trainee, etc.

For those who are spriting, I've been looking at items to develop and I found this on Iroh.org:

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep1/ep1-809.png

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep2/ep2-361.png <--- Emphasis this one, I see a lot of those spears in the Fire Nation. Seems very common.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep2/ep2-610.png <- some kind of sword.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep4/ep4-807.png <-Name is the fan. I got this one.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep5/ep5-181.png <--- Enter Earth Kingdom weaponry.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep5/ep5-304.png<- Aha! I'll look for a better picture of this weapon.
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep5/ep5-417.png

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep5/ep5-740.png <--- In a word, awesome
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep5/ep5-748.png

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep7/ep7-505.png <--- Not a weapon. Concept stuff for ostrichhorses, which I believe SOTS and I have determined is definitely going to be in the future.
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep7/ep7-505.png <-- more complete picture of the beast itself, but I used the other one because I liked the lantern idea.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep7/ep7-973.png <--- Iroh was improvising, but I believe we can use a similar design for effective whips. I'll post June's whip next to this one when I find it.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep8/ep8-96.png <----Fire Nation Sword. Looks like a European kind of two hander. But look at the hilt in the next one.
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep8/ep8-99.png <--- It's a little bit stylized. This is good for spriters of this weapon to remember.
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep8/ep8-99.png <--- Whole sword and up close, but moving.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-357.png <--- Pirate gear.
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-358.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-359.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-361.png <--- Hm, Nunchuk wielding pirates? These are pirates who fight like ninja. lol.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-709.png <---- Kind of hard to see.
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-713.png <---- This is the idea.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-718.png <---- I don't know if this should really be a weapon since nets would require some pretty tricky scripting, but the double-cross bow would be pretty cool if you ignored the net.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-754.png

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-791.png <--- Item, not a weapon. I like the concept

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-837.png <--- I really like the shape and style of this sword. It'd be nice to sprite this one.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-104.png <----- Gasp! The Fire Nation changes spears!

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-146.png <--- The infamous Jet swords.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-216.png <---- When all else fails, use the LOG! It's better than bad, it's good.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-242.png <---- The old bone club action

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-275.png <------ Some interesting swords that would be easy to add.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-539.png <--- I like this knife.
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-540.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-540.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-542.png <---hm. I think this would require special scripting so you can skip the secret compartment for now and add that as a special item later

I'm afraid that I'm uneducated in the names of most of these weapons. Are the fictional items only belonging in Avatar or are they inspired by real weapons that have real names already?
Even the swords might have a more specific name I don't know.

EDIT: I had initially meant to just post the first image, but my research is turning this single post into a living thread which is updating quite a bit. When I see something I'd like to make into an item, I'll just post it here. To keep this thread short, I'll probably just use this one post for everything I have to say here.

I got nothing in the way of skills, but I can make any computer roll over and beg, so I'm willing to be trained or do whatever.

Also it would be harder but you should use the actual fighting styles that are beased on each nation instead of having generic punching and kicking

Actiual fighting styles in top-down zelda perspective won't work very well IMO ;)

I PMed Sots about helping with some spriting. I can also do some development.

As per Pleh’s request:

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep1/ep1-809.png

Those clubs/ blades are more or less Japanese in origin (Hence their place in the Fire Nation). From left to right: A stylized Naginata, a Kanabo, a Bishamon-Yari, and an early Naginata. Good for a weapons aficionado or dealer.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep2/ep2-361.png

I've never come across that particular design. Looks like a Japanese Jumonji-Yari (cross-headed spear) with a slightly stylized head in the shape of a fire nation symbol. It’s everywhere in the Fire Nation military… just call it a Fire Nation Spear.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep2/ep2-610.png

The leaf-blade shape and small hilt don’t appear anywhere in Asia to my knowledge. It looks like a medieval European leaf-bladed broadsword. I know it appears everywhere in the FN military. Just call it a Fire Nation Sword.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep4/ep4-807.png

You got it... Fans.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep5/ep5-181.png

I don't know what to call that. It looks like the kind of weapon you would make with early mass-production. Steel sheet metal with a sharp point cut into it. Hopefully it can remain scenery, because I have no name for it.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep5/ep5-304.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep5/ep5-417.png

That I can identify immediately. It's a Guandao. Pretty common Chinese pole arm. Feel free to use it anywhere in the Earth Kingdom.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep5/ep5-740.png

That's a lochaber axe. 14th century Scottish Polearm. Not very Asian, but meh. Just call it a war axe, if you must. I don’t believe anyone else in the series has anything approaching an axe. So, restrict it to a boss/ specific NPC.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep5/ep5-748.png

That would be a Japanese Tsuki Nari Yari. Or at least a stylized version of it.

MOAR:

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep7/ep7-505.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep7/ep7-505.png

If you’re looking for inspiration, find some pics of the Kaadu from Starwars: Episode 1. Here’s one: http://www.cswu.cz/prequels/animals/images/kaadu.jpg

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep7/ep7-973.png

Chain Whips do exist, and are used in Chinese martial arts. Generally the links are about 4-6 inches long, though.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep8/ep8-96.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep8/ep8-99.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep8/ep8-99.png

I mentioned this with the first sword. A leaf-bladed sword (One that widens before narrowing down along the length of the sword) is a very European design. It’s used more so to strike with the ‘fat’ part of the sword than for stabbing.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-357.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-358.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-359.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-361.png

The pirates use some pretty exotic Chinese and Japanese weapons. They’re obviously based on Ninjas in they way they fight. In the first pic, the guy in the foreground is wielding a pair of Kama, Japanese sickle like weapons. The man behind him is wielding a stylized version of a Naginata. In the second pic, the transvestite (lol) in the foreground is using a pair of steel daggers. I’m not really an expert on daggers, but they’re definitely Japanese. The guy in the background is holding a pretty exotic weapon. Looks northern Chinese. Appears to be pretty similar to Jet’s Shuanggou. In the third picture, you recognized the nunchaku. The guy to the far left is wielding another Naginata, this one more traditional than the first one.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-709.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-713.png

Now, the guy who appeared in the background of the first two of the last screenshots: The Meteor Hammer! The Meteor Hammer, Chinese in origin, is a length of rope, about 6 feet long, with a 5-6 pound weight attached to one or both ends. A similar weapon is the rope dart, with a 10-15ft rope and a small pointed head.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-718.png

That’s probably imaginary. Crossbow bolts are nowhere near exact/ precise enough to be used to launch a net.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-754.png

Same weapon as from the second pic. The small hooks at either end look like it could be used to swipe with either end, or thrust forward if the opponent comes at you. The crescent hand guards are as sharp as a blade.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-791.png <--- Item, not a weapon. I like the concept

Small smoke-bombs. Typical exotic weapon of the ninja pirate. Explosive combinations of chemicals that will explode upon impact. Other chemicals that release a lot of smoke when combusted are also mixed in.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep9/ep9-837.png

Now THAT is a traditional Chinese Jin sword. Just a straight blade that tapers to a point about an inch from the tip.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-104.png

What interests me more is the spear in the foreground. That design, with the red tuft, is exactly to the specifications of a Chinese Qiang (Spear). That sword in the background looks kind of like a Jin, but the fact that the tip tapers down to a point over a few inches leads me to think it’s European.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-146.png

Shuanggao. Hook swords (Chinese Shuanggao) are always used in pairs. They can be sharp along their length, or blunt. They have a curled hook and one end, with a sharp point on the end. The crescent hand guards are sharpened, and used to deflect anyone who tries to come up against the wielder. On the other end of the hook sword is a sharpened dagger point. Experienced users can toss up one sword and hook it with the other. When swung (As I believe Jet did during his fight with Zuko), the linked swords can slash at someone 6 feet away.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-216.png

Yep. Big guy with a log.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-242.png

That appears to be a Fibula with a hardened stone or metal head.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-275.png

Again, those look like traditional Chinese Jin.

http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-539.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-540.png
http://piandao.org/screencaps/ep10/ep10-542.png

That’s pretty hard to place. Kind of a cross between a dagger and a kris (serpentine shortsword). Of course, the idea of a poisoned dagger is completely feasible.

Feel free to post anything else you want identified, Pleh. I can also add it to this post, to keep it condensed and near yours.

3d would be insanely difficult, and probably pretty expensive. However you could represent the styles in a 3/4 top down perspective pretty well, although it would be even easier to represent it in a sidescroller perspective.

Also, the weapon ideas sound good, and RWT is very well versed in Asian weaponry, haha.

I would LOVE to do some of the scripting and creating NPCs. My friends (who aren't on this forumn, sadly...) do this for fun in our free time...yeah. we're huge nerds, and I'm sure they'd love to help as well. Just let me know. I know I'm a newer member, but still....

And: is this going to be a very serious sort of RPG? Or will it include some humor? Just curious.

Is it going to incorporate the martial arts associated with each of the elements i.e. Ba Gua for Airbending, Tai Chi for Waterbending, Hung Gar for Earthbending, Northern Shaolin for Waterbending?

Also, are all Air Nomads going to have the ability to bend, like in the show, or is there going to be a choice of whether or no your character is a bender, even when you choose for your character to be an Air Nomad?
