Silverlily's ATLA Pottery

Postby silverlily » Mon Aug 29, 2011 10:50 pm

Ok, I'm going to do this in a few different posts. I've made four pieces to represent the four elements of ATLA, and I figured I should share them with people who could appreciate them. If you have any questions about their composition, feel free to PM me. Also, I tried to make the pictures smaller on photobucket.com but when I posted the images here they stayed the same size, so sorry they are so large.

WATER (gray clay) *I like the back more.

After fired for the first time, I stained the piece with a blue V glaze and then I used O, LM, and LG glazes for the rest of it. I just made a bunch of coils and integrated them on the inside, so that the viewer could see the patterns on the outside (not my idea, just the assignment).

FIRE (Porcelin)

This one is wheel thrown. I used water etching to make the fire nation symbol higher than the rest of the bowl (when you put wax over the part you want to pop out and wipe away the rest with a sponge). I used V glazes and put superclear over it to make it shine.

And thank you for the kind comments to Air and jessepeng.

AIR (gray clay)

I just used slabs of gray glay and attatched the edges using beleving. It started as a box, and then I twisted it for a more organic shape. The poor thing got banged up in the kiln, so there are a ton of dents (which I tried to file away).

I made all of these while I was in pottery last year, Air.

EARTH (raku)

So this one is done using the raku method. After firing the cylinder once, it's taken out of the kiln while still red-hot. The piece is thrown into a trash can, where a fire has been set up. It's left in there for about twenty minutes (the longer, the cooler the colors turn out) and then it's taken out and dunked in water. The thing about raku is that you never know what you're going to get, so I was happily surprised to find that a silver color had formed at the bottom of my cylinder, and the blotchy color pattern was actually what I was aiming for. So this is my favorite piece, and I'm really proud of it.

Thank you for viewing my creations. Again, if you have any questions about how they were made, just let me know!
